MAGNET SCHOOLS MISSION:
Excellence and Equity
In August, 2008, the Burlington School Commissioners directed the administration to form Vermont’s first two magnet schools at the Lawrence Barnes and H.O. Wheeler buildings. The goals of these elementary schools are excellence – to be incubators for innovative ideas – and equity – to balance demographics in every classroom (this principle is also known as socio-economic integration). The Burlington School District plan for magnet schools is the result of four years of research conducted by, and with, more than one thousand Burlington citizens, parents, teachers, administrators, education professors, and community activists. We think we have laid a great foundation for the success of Vermont’s first magnet schools because they have grown out of local community conversations, national research, as well as an exhaustive market study of preschool and elementary parents.
